Roofing Contractor in Long Beach

Power Roofing is a licensed roofing contractor in Long Beach for roof repairs, complete re-roofs and new roofs on residential and commercial properties. More than half of the city’s homes were built before 1960, and older Long Beach roofs can hide several layers, wood shake included on some of our own tear-offs here. In the city’s historic districts, a re-roof also needs historic review of colors and materials.

With over 20 years of experience, we offer high-quality roofing solutions for both residential and commercial properties in Long Beach and surrounding areas. Power Roofing covers Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties from offices in Los Angeles, Sherman Oaks and Irvine, and Long Beach and its neighboring cities are part of our Los Angeles County work. Contact us today for a free roof inspection and estimate; you receive detailed estimates before work begins.

Long Beach roofs we have replaced

A selection of recent Long Beach work, with photos in the project cards:

  • Three layers off, new deck (2021). A 2,100 sq ft roof tear-off with three layers removed (wood shake), complete plywood installation, Owens Corning Duration Cool shingles in Mountainside and improved attic ventilation.
  • Wood shake and flat roof replaced (2022). A tear-off of the wood shake and the flat roof, new plywood (a re-deck), Owens Corning Duration Cool shingles in Night Sky, a Polyglass cool roof and improved attic ventilation.
  • Shingle and flat roof together (2022). A shingle roof in Owens Corning Duration Cool, color Mojave, and a Polyglass flat roof, Polyfresko Title 24.
  • Complete roof replacement (2023). Owens Corning Duration Cool shingles in Amber with improved attic ventilation.

Why so many Long Beach re-roofs start with a full tear-off

In the Census Bureau’s 2019-2023 American Community Survey, the median housing unit in Long Beach was built in 1958, about 53% of units were built before 1960, and about 19% before 1940.

Houses from those decades can carry several roof layers, wood shake among them, as on our 2021 and 2022 Long Beach tear-offs above: three layers came off one house, wood shake came off both, and new plywood went down.

The 2025 California Residential Code does not allow a roof recover where the existing roof has two or more applications of any type of roof covering (section R908.4, exception 3), and it requires asphalt shingles to be fastened to wood structural panels or solid lumber sheathing (R905.2.1). So on a layered roof the layers come off, the deck is checked, and solid sheathing goes down where the old boards cannot hold the new roof. When an estimate includes re-decking, this is the reason; ask for the deck work to be listed separately from the shingles. Our roof replacement page walks through the whole process.

Energy-efficient roofing for coastal and inland Long Beach

Long Beach spans two California building climate zones in the California Energy Commission’s ZIP code list. Most of the city, including 90802, 90803, 90804, 90806, 90810, 90813, 90814 and 90815, is in Climate Zone 6, the mild coastal zone. ZIP codes 90805, 90807 and 90808 are in Climate Zone 8, a warmer inland zone. Energy standards for roofs and attics depend on the climate zone, so the same house can face different requirements a few miles apart.

In practice, energy-efficient roofing here comes down to three choices you can see in the projects above:

  1. Cool-rated shingles that reflect more sunlight than standard dark shingles, in a range of colors.
  2. A reflective flat roof membrane or coating on low-slope sections, which run hottest in summer.
  3. Better attic ventilation, which lets heat escape from under the roof and helps the shingles last.

Near the water, salt air adds a fourth point: corrosion-resistant flashing, fasteners and vent caps.

Re-roofing in a Long Beach historic district

Long Beach has 18 neighborhoods designated as historic districts by the City Council, among them Bluff Park, Bluff Heights, Belmont Heights, California Heights, Rose Park, Carroll Park, Drake Park / Wilmore City and the Wrigley Area. If your house is in one of them, plan for an extra step:

  • Any exterior change to a historic landmark or a property in a historic district needs a Certificate of Appropriateness before work starts, even when no building permit is required.
  • Re-roofing a home or an accessory structure in a historic district requires historic review of the colors and materials, and the city charges no fee for that review.
  • Ordinary maintenance and repairs with no physical exterior change do not need historic review.

Building permits themselves are handled by the city’s Building and Safety Bureau at the Permit Center in City Hall, 411 W. Ocean Blvd., where appointments can be booked online.

Our Difference

What Sets Power Roofing Apart

Roofing Specialists

We specialize exclusively in roofing. This specialization means we've developed deep expertise across all roofing services. We're not general contractors dabbling in roofing. We're roofing specialists who understand every aspect of roof systems, materials, installation techniques, and maintenance.

Quality Materials & Installation

We prioritize quality materials and professional installation. We partner with reputable manufacturers and use premium materials on every project. Installation technique is just as important as material quality. Improper installation compromises even the best materials. Our trained specialists execute installation following manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.

Transparent Communication

We maintain transparent communication throughout every project. You receive detailed estimates before work begins. We explain our recommendations honestly, discuss material options and cost implications, and keep you informed as work progresses. Clear communication prevents surprises and builds confidence.

Emergency Response

We respond quickly to emergencies. Roof leaks don't wait for convenient scheduling. We prioritize emergency calls, responding quickly to prevent water damage to your home or business. Our emergency response capability provides peace of mind knowing professional help is available when you need it most.

Repairs and upkeep between re-roofs

Not every leak needs a new roof. A slipped shingle, a cracked vent boot or an open seam on a flat roof is a repair, handled through our roofing repair services. In a historic district the difference also matters for review: a repair with no physical exterior change skips historic review, while a re-roof does not.

For flat roofs on commercial buildings and on the flat sections of houses, we recommend annual inspections, particularly after severe weather. Regular inspections catch problems early when they’re less expensive to fix. Drains, parapet seams and the coating are the places to look; see roof maintenance.

Nearby areas we serve

We also work in the cities around Long Beach. What stands out about the housing and roofs in each:

  • Lakewood: about 67% of homes were built before 1960; our 2025 Lakewood roof replacement included removing multiple layers and wood shake, new solid plywood sheathing and new R-38 attic insulation.
  • Cerritos: newer than its neighbors, with a median build year of 1974 and about 82% of homes from 1950 to 1979.
  • Bellflower: median build year 1966, with about 57% of homes built from 1950 to 1979.
  • Downey: about 68% of homes were built from 1950 to 1979, the prime age for a full tear-off and new deck.
  • Paramount: among the younger housing in the area, with a median build year of 1970.
  • Compton: about 59% of homes were built before 1960, so a deck check belongs in any re-roof estimate.
  • South Gate: the oldest housing of this group, with a median build year of 1952 and about 23% of homes built before 1940.
  • Bell Gardens: median build year 1959, with about 29% of homes built before 1950.
  • Pico Rivera: about 65% of homes were built before 1960, with a median build year of 1957.
  • Whittier: about 13% of homes predate 1940; our Whittier work includes a new roof on a historical high-pitch home from 1865, with complete new plywood decking.
  • South Whittier: an unincorporated community (a Census-designated place, not a city), so permits and inspections go through Los Angeles County Public Works Building and Safety; about 63% of its homes were built before 1960.

Housing figures are from the Census Bureau’s 2019-2023 American Community Survey. For every city we cover, see our service area.
