Roofing Contractor in Pasadena, CA

Power Roofing is a licensed roofing contractor in Pasadena, CA (License #1073368) that replaces, repairs and installs roofs on Pasadena houses, apartment buildings and commercial property, in shingle, tile, standing seam metal and flat roofing systems. We offer free roof inspections, and you receive a detailed estimate before work begins. With over 20 years of experience, we offer high-quality roofing solutions for both residential and commercial properties in Pasadena and surrounding areas.

Before a Pasadena re-roof, three local checks decide what the job involves: whether the house is a designated historic resource or sits in a landmark district (alterations there go through a Certificate of Appropriateness), whether it is in a mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and, when more than half of the roof is replaced, the climate zone 9 cool-roof minimum. Each is explained below.

Our crews cover Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties from three offices, in Los Angeles, Sherman Oaks and Irvine, and the San Gabriel Valley is part of our Los Angeles County service area. Call us or request a free inspection to get started.

What does an older Pasadena home mean for a roof replacement?

Pasadena’s houses are old, and the numbers show it. In the Census Bureau’s 2019-2023 American Community Survey, the median year built for the city’s roughly 63,000 housing units is 1960, about half were built before 1960, and nearly three in ten were built before 1940.

On a house that old, the condition of a roof can be hidden under the surface: original board decking, flashing that has been patched more than once, or a newer covering laid over an older one. On an older Pasadena home, start with the city, not the roof: confirm whether the house is a designated resource, check the fire hazard map for the address, and look up its permit history on the city’s Permit Center Online to see when the roof was last replaced.

Our roof replacement page covers materials and the tear-off, deck and installation steps in more depth; for a leak on an otherwise sound roof, see our roof repair services.

Our Difference

What Sets Power Roofing Apart

Roofing Specialists

We specialize exclusively in roofing. This specialization means we've developed deep expertise across all roofing services. We're not general contractors dabbling in roofing. We're roofing specialists who understand every aspect of roof systems, materials, installation techniques, and maintenance.

Quality Materials & Installation

We prioritize quality materials and professional installation. We partner with reputable manufacturers and use premium materials on every project. Installation technique is just as important as material quality. Improper installation compromises even the best materials. Our trained specialists execute installation following manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.

Transparent Communication

We maintain transparent communication throughout every project. You receive detailed estimates before work begins. We explain our recommendations honestly, discuss material options and cost implications, and keep you informed as work progresses. Clear communication prevents surprises and builds confidence.

Emergency Response

We respond quickly to emergencies. Roof leaks don't wait for convenient scheduling. We prioritize emergency calls, responding quickly to prevent water damage to your home or business. Our emergency response capability provides peace of mind knowing professional help is available when you need it most.

Do you need historic approval to re-roof in Pasadena?

Only if the property is designated or sits in a landmark district, and then it can. Pasadena has designated historic properties and landmark districts across the city. The city’s Design & Historic Preservation section explains the process for obtaining a Certificate of Appropriateness for alterations within a historic site or district, and the Historic Preservation Commission reviews applications for major alterations.

A change of roofing material or profile on a designated property can count as an alteration. If your house is a designated resource or sits in a landmark district, ask the city’s Design & Historic Preservation staff before you settle on a new material, and keep their answer with your permit file.

What cool-roof rule applies to a Pasadena re-roof?

Every ZIP code area that overlaps Pasadena on the Census Bureau’s 2020 ZIP-to-place relationship file (mainly 91101, 91103, 91104, 91105, 91106 and 91107) is in building climate zone 9 on the California Energy Commission’s ZIP code table. That matters when more than half of a roof is replaced, because section 150.2(b)1I of the 2025 Energy Code then sets minimum reflectance values for the new product.

Flat roofs have the stricter minimum: a low-slope roof (flatter than 2:12) replaced in zone 9 needs an aged solar reflectance of at least 0.63 and thermal emittance of 0.75, or a Solar Reflectance Index of 75, which in practice means a light-colored membrane or coating. Pitched roofs need a lower aged reflectance of 0.20 (or SRI 16), and the code lets them skip it when the attic already meets one of its insulation, radiant barrier or duct exceptions.

Roofs on Pasadena apartment buildings and commercial property

Fewer than half of Pasadena’s housing units (42.5 percent) are single-family detached homes, and only 42.1 percent are owner-occupied, so a large share of the city’s roofs belong to landlords and building owners. A building like that can mix pitched sections with flat areas over stairwells, carports and mechanical equipment.

In 2024 we completed a roof replacement on a commercial apartment building in Pasadena with Owens Corning Duration Cool Series shingles in Amber. On another Pasadena home in 2025 we installed an energy-efficient Owens Corning Cool Roof paired with a standing seam metal roof. Flat portions can be replaced with a single-ply membrane such as TPO or, when the existing roof is sound, restored with a coating: in neighboring San Marino in 2023 we completed a roof restoration with a LeakProof coating, with no demolition required.

For metal options and how standing seam is installed, see our metal roofing page.

What Pasadena's fire hazard maps mean for your roof

The State Fire Marshal has released updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for local responsibility areas, and the City of Pasadena is required by state law to adopt them by ordinance. You can find your address on the Fire Department’s FHSZ page.

According to the CAL FIRE fact sheet the city publishes with the maps, California’s wildland-urban interface building code (California Building Code Chapter 7A) applies to new buildings in High and Very High zones of local responsibility areas, and local ordinances may require ignition-resistant construction for remodel projects. The same sheet notes that zone status is part of the natural hazard disclosure when a home is sold. If your house is in or near a mapped zone, ask the Permit Center which rules apply to your re-roof before choosing materials.

How does a roofing permit work in Pasadena?

Pasadena’s Permit Center is a one-stop counter where staff from several departments handle development review and permits. Contractors pulling permits must present a City of Pasadena business license on arrival, so it is fair to ask any roofer you are considering whether they hold one.

The city’s Permit Center Online lets you research a property, search its permit history and schedule inspections, which is also a quick way to see when a roof was last replaced.

On the Census ZIP-to-place file, nearly all of the land in each of them lies in ZIP code areas that are zone 9 on the Energy Commission table (small edges of Pomona and Claremont fall in zones 10 and 16), so the same cool-roof rule applies to most re-roofs there. One local note for each:
